Copper levels evolution in Arcachon bay oysters : role of the regulation on antifouling paints ArchiMer
Alzieu, Claude; Barbier, Georges; Sanjuan, Jane.
The ban of tributyltin compounds in antifouling paints induced a strong decrease in the level of tin in Arcachon bay. At the same time, copper inputs have increased tenfold since 1982 owing to the widespread use of paints containing cuprous oxide. In spite of this large input, the statistical analysis of monitoring data (1979-1985) show a relative stability in the copper levels in Arcachon bay oysters.

Alzieu, Claude; Le Baut, Claire; Sanjuan, Jane.

Sanjuan, Jane; Cossa, Daniel.

Evaluation of dissolved and particulate arsenic flux in the Dover strait (fluxmanche program) ArchiMer
Michel, Pierre; Averty, Bernard; Noel, Joelle; Sanjuan, Jane.
In order to estimate arsenic flux from the English Channel toward the North Sea, 168 samples were obtained from September 1990 to November 1991 along a transect between Boulogne and Folkestone comprising six stations and two depths. Organic and inorganic arsenic were measured in dissolved phase and total arsenic in suspended particles. The mean concentration of dissolved total arsenic in water was 1.38 +/- 0.12 mug.l-1. The variability of measured concentrations was low, particularly for the four intermediate stations. Results were slightly more sensitive for English (1.38 +/- 0.12 mug.l-1) and French (135 +/- 0.11 mug.l-1) coastal stations due to exchanges with shallower sediments. Dissolved organic arsenic was nearly negligible from December to March...

Because of the low number of currently available toxicity tests for marine environment, the authors describe an experimental procedure using a marine copepod : Tigriopus brevicornis. This method can be used to quantify the 50 % inhibition of larval production or growth. The variability in controls larval production reaches about 9 %. The toxicity of two contaminants : tributyltin (TBTF) and cadmium chloride (CdCl2) was determined with this method and the 50 % decreases in larval production are respectively 1,4 µg/l (TBTF) and 61 µg/l (Cd++).

Sublethal and histopathological effects of trace levels of tributyltin fluoride on adult oysters Crassostrea gigas ArchiMer
Chagot, Dominique; Alzieu, Claude; Sanjuan, Jane; Grizel, Henri.
Shell malformations and histological effects of environmental concentrations of TBTF (2, 13.1 and 64.8 ng/!) were assessed on adult oysters Crassostrea gigas during a I-month experiment, incIuding both an exposure and a depuration phase. The results showed that the digestive gland is the primary target organ. Recoverable modifications were observed at the lowest concentration. Limited necrosis was observed at the highest concentration and a longer exposure could have led to extensive and irreversible tissue lesions. Shell malformations (chambering) were observed during the depuration phase. Finally the authors suggest that safe TBT levels in mariculture waters should be lower than 2 ng/l.
